Ambion
美國ABI Ambion www.ambion.com www.appliedbiosystems.com
Ambion
In 2006, Ambion was acquired by Applied Biosystems, a technology leader and driving force in the changing dynamics of the life science marketplace for over 25 years. Ambion is now a center of excellence within the Applied Biosystems consumables business. The Ambion brand encompasses a complete range of products for researchers whose work involves RNA. These include products for the isolation, detection, quantification, amplification, and characterization of RNA.
Ambion, The RNA Company®
Ambion was started by Matt Winkler, a professor at the University of Texas. His research required the use of a large number of reagents that were collectively more expensive than his NIH grant could afford, so many needed reagents were made within his laboratory. These reagents were well received and appreciated by his colleagues, spurring him to start a company to manufacture high quality, cutting edge reagents.
Ambion was incorporated in November 1988 and began operations in July 1989 in Austin, Texas. The company's primary focus was the development of products for RNA-related research applications. Ambion grew at a compounded annual growth rate exceeding 30% per year through the development, manufacture, and selling of molecular biology reagents to the life science and diagnostic markets. Ambion was privately held through February 2006.
Ambion and Applied Biosystems Become One
Ambion was acquired by Applied Biosystems on March 1, 2006. This acquisition was an important component of Applied Biosystems' strategy to drive growth by expanding the consumables product offering. Ambion is considered a center of excellence within the Applied Biosystems consumables business.
Significant revenue, operational, and scientific synergies have been created by combining Ambion with Applied Biosystems, and Ambion products enable Applied Biosystems to offer customers more complete workflow solutions. Ambion's RNA R&D expertise, consumables manufacturing capabilities, and culture of scientific innovation complement AB's existing strengths, and the combination provides researchers with new tools to explore gene expression and regulation.
RNA Knowledge = Quality Products
The Ambion brand encompasses a complete range of products for researchers whose work involves RNA. These include products for isolation, detection, quantification, amplification, and characterization of RNA. RNA can be a difficult molecule to work with. It is readily degraded by RNases that are found in a variety of environmental sources, including fingerprints. While many procedures will tolerate small amounts of RNases, the most critical procedures require virtually nuclease-free conditions. This means that Ambion had to develop a variety of specialized manufacturing and quality control procedures to insure the proper and reliable functioning of its products. Early in its history, Ambion set a goal of offering the highest quality and purity enzymes and reagents. Ambion enzymes are purified to much higher levels than normally occurs within the industry. Ambion kits are designed to work well not only under perfect conditions, but also when there is inadvertent introduction of partially degraded RNA by investigators, RNase contamination, or other less-than-ideal conditions. This is referred to as "building robustness" into the products and continues to be a primary focus of product development today.
